Karen is a Colorado native who was born in La Junta, Colorado. In her career, Karen has served in community health clinics, rural health clinics and migrant health centers. She has also been on the faculty of several schools of nursing, including University of Colorado in Denver and Colorado Springs, Colorado State University, Pueblo, Bethel College in Colorado Springs, and Regis University in Denver.
In her free time, Karen enjoys Nordic and alpine skiing, golf, mountain biking, water skiing and gardening. She is a member of the Descendants of the 10th Mountain Division Ski Troopers, and serves on the Crowley County Fair Board.

- Karen has served as an Emergency Nurse, Public Health Nurse, Surgical Nurse, and Nurse Practitioner in many community health centers, rural health clinics, and migrant health clinics, including Centennial Family Health Center in Ordway, CO.
- July 2003 to Present – Family Nurse Practitioner and Owner of Centennial Family Health Center.
